Imported from China in the 12th century, tea quickly formed a connection with the Japanese spiritual world and evolved into the refined discipline we know as sado (lit. “the way of tea”). This cultural practice, which has profoundly influenced modern Japanese culture and our deep-rooted sense of hospitality, has been preserved for centuries based on the core concept of sustainability. During the Warring States period, the Samurai, living daily on the brink of death, saw a reflection of their own lives in a bowl of matcha (powdered green tea). The spirit of sado is expressed by the phrase “Ichigo Ichie,” which means to treasure every meeting as a once in a lifetime event, and to carry the meaning of that encounter into the future. Enjoy sweets and matcha, along with an explanation from the Tea Master, while observing the preparation, which is often described as the most refined set of movements in the world. Each Tea Ceremony is 45 minutes instead of the regular 90-minute workshops. Ideal for people who’d like a bit more free time during the day but still explore traditional Japanese culture.
