Iaidō is the Japanese martial art of the sword. Each technique is characterized by starting with the sword sheathed in the scabbard, and the practitioner responding to a variety of opponents attacking from situations a samurai would traditionally have had to deal with before resheathing the sword—from fighting in narrow spaces, buildings with low ceilings, and even when an opponent suddenly tries to steal your sword. The style that will be demonstrated is known as Musō Shinden Jūshin Ryū or shortened to Jūshin Ryū after the school’s founder. This style of swordsmanship is traditionally only passed on directly from teacher to disciple to ensure an unbroken lineage. This school of swordsmanship not only contains singleperson drills known as kata, but also two-person fencing, close-contact grappling, and a vast variety of military tactics from days long past. Nowadays, there are only around 100 people practicing this style in Japan, thus giving convention attendees a rare opportunity to witness a live demonstration of such a rare art.
