According to the World Tourism Organisation, “Sustainable tourism development meets the needs of present tourists and host regions while protecting and enhancing opportunities for the future. It is envisaged as leading to management of all resources in such a way that economic, social and aesthetic needs can be fulfilled while maintaining cultural integrity, essential ecological processes, biological diversity, and life support systems.” Our discussion will present a new way of approaching sustainable tourism through best practices using social media platforms and through “eco-media” to connect travelers with meaningful and sustainable tour products. This discussion will include how to apply “Leave No Trace” principles to social media to educate tourist guides and their guests on how to become digitally sustainable travelers. We will also discuss guidelines for producing eco-content on social media anchored to purposeful, authentic, and eco-friendly experiences. This will be an interactive session, with discussion and problem-solving following our talk.
