Arrival in Fukuoka

Arrive at Fukuoka International Airport and be greeted by our welcoming team.

Transfer to your hotel in Fukuoka, where you can relax and prepare for the adventure ahead.

Yamaga & Kumomoto: From Ancient Streets to Samurai Stories

Your adventure begins with a journey from Fukuoka to the tranquil city of Yamaga, a hidden gem where time seems to stand still.

As you explore its timeless streets, you’ll be immersed in an atmosphere of serene elegance and deeply rooted culture.

We’ll also explore the historic Yachiyoza Kabuki Theater, getting a unique look behind the curtain of this centuries-old tradition. 

Afterward, we’ll travel to the heart of Kumamoto, where you’ll stand in awe of one of Japan’s most impressive castles. Its stunning architecture and commanding presence serve as a powerful testament to centuries of feudal history and samurai might.

You will also get a glimpse into the ongoing restoration of the castle, which was damaged in the 2016 earthquake, where artisans are meticulously preserving the historical building techniques.

Takachiho: Birthplace of Japanese Myth

Early morning departure to Takachiho, a place steeped in Japanese legend.

Visit the sacred Takachiho Gorge, where towering cliffs and emerald waters create a mystical atmosphere.

Experience a Kagura Dance Performance – a traditional Shinto ritual that retells the ancient myths of Japan.

Explore Amanoiwato Shrine, where it is said the sun goddess Amaterasu once hid in a cave, bringing darkness to the world.

Izumi & Kagoshima: Coastal Beauty and Volcanic Majesty

As we continue south toward Kagoshima, we’ll make a stop in Izumi and learn about the local efforts to protect the majestic crane population – an iconic symbol of Japan.

Following this we’ll arrive in Kagoshima City, where you’ll get your first unforgettable glimpse of its iconic, active volcano, Sakurajima. We’ll take in this breathtaking view from the stunning Sengan-en Garden, a masterpiece of landscape-design that masterfully incorporates the volcano and the expansive bay as its backdrop.

Aso-Kuju National Park: The Land of Fire

Journey to Aso-Kuju National Park, home to Mount Aso, one of the largest volcanic calderas in the world.

Explore Daikanbo Viewpoint for panoramic views of the crater and the spectacular valleys below.

Visit Kusasenri Plateau, where grazing horses roam against the dramatic backdrop of the volcano.

Discover Mount Nakadake, one of Mount Aso’s active craters, where you can witness the steam rising from the earth.

Kagoshima: Living Traditions and the Earth’s Raw Power

On the last day of the alternative Pre-Programme, we’ll delve into the the daily life of Kagoshima, where the majestic volcano is an ever-present part of the landscape and life.

You’ll learn how the local community was built around its presence, adapting to the frequent volcanic ash with a deep and abiding respect for nature’s immense power.

We will then journey to Sakurajima, where you will experience its raw, breathtaking force up close and truly take in how this is more than just a landmark; it’s a living entity that has shaped local life and been a subject of worship for centuries.

 

Return to and overnight in Fukuoka.

Beppu: The Land of Hot Springs

Enjoy Beppu, Japan’s premier hot spring resort town, known for its onsen culture.

Visit the Hells of Beppu (Jigoku Meguri) – a series of spectacular hot springs that are not for bathing but for admiring:

  • Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) – a cobalt blue hot spring.
  • Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell) – a striking red thermal pool.

 

Enjoy a relaxing foot bath at a public hot spring and witness traditional onsen tamago (eggs cooked in the hot springs).

  • Visit Beppy City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Centre, which exhibits centuries-old, culturally important woven bamboo handicrafts.
  • Discover Myoban Onsen, whichis the only place in the world where both the manufacturin technique of Yunohana (natural bath salts made from hot spring mineral deposits) and the landscape have been designated as cultural heritage

 

Return to Fukuoka in the afternoon.

  • Entrance to the Hells of Beppu circuit
  • Local guided tour explaining the history and science behind Beppu’s famous hot springs
  • Lunch of local delicacies using the Jigoku Mushi cooking method (a style of cooking using the steam from hot springs).
  • Transportation back to Fukuoka

 

Overnight in Fukuoka

Included Services for the Original and New Pre-Programme:

  • Accommodation: 3 nights in handpicked hotels (including the night of February 5th)
  • Transportation: Shinkansen (bullet train) and private coach for all travel within the Pre-Programme itinerary.

Pre Convention Programme for Delegates

Delegates and their accompanying persons will take part in the original Pre-Programme and return to Fukuoka after lunch on Day 2 (Saturday, February 7) to attend the General Assembly the next day (Sunday, February 8).

At the same time we will arrange a special cultural programme for their accommpanying persons in Fukuoka.

Highlights and Programme Features:

  • Two-day cultural experience in Takachiho and Aso
  • Expert-guided tours in English on both days
  • Half-day programme for accompanying persons on Sunday 08 February to align with the General Assembly schedule
