Individual Membership is designed for professional Tourist Guides in countries where no Tourist Guide Association exists or where the existing association is not a member of the WFTGA. Under the current Constitution, this category is therefore intended as a temporary membership, offering individual guides access to the global WFTGA network until a local association is established or joins the Federation.
We strongly encourage Individual Members to consider forming an association or motivating existing associations in their country to join the WFTGA. A strong guiding profession is best served when Tourist Guides are organised, represented and empowered collectively.
Why This System Is Changing
In recent years, we have observed that the current model is no longer fully fit for purpose. In many regions, associations have dissolved, are inactive, pursue different agendas, or do not represent the guiding profession in a way that reflects WFTGA’s mission and standards.
At the same time, thousands of dedicated Tourist Guides worldwide seek recognition, support and access to global professional networks — regardless of whether their country has a functioning association.
For this reason, the Executive Board is currently revising the Constitution. From summer 2026, we aim to allow all professional Tourist Guides worldwide direct access to WFTGA, independent of their national association structures.
This future Individual Membership will include a minimum standard of guiding skills or qualifications to ensure professional integrity and consistent WFTGA quality.
Until this reform enters into force, the current Individual Membership rules apply.

As an Individual Member of the WFTGA, you gain access to the global guiding community and a broad range of support, resources and networking opportunities.

Who can become an Individual Member of the WFTGA?
Individual Membership is open to professional Tourist Guides in countries without a Tourist Guide Association, or where an association exists but is not a WFTGA Full Member.
Is Individual Membership permanent?
No. Under the current Constitution, it is considered a temporary solution until:
- a national association is formed, or
- an existing association decides to join the WFTGA.
Why is this system being reviewed?
Because in many parts of the world:
- associations have dissolved or are inactive,
- associations pursue interests not aligned with the guiding profession,
- individual guides lack national representation.
- We therefore plan to introduce a modern, direct membership model from 2026.
Will all Tourist Guides be able to join directly in the future?
Yes. From summer 2026, all professional Tourist Guides will be able to join the WFTGA directly — with a minimum guiding skill standard for quality assurance.
What benefits do Individual Members receive today?
- Monthly WFTGA newsletter
- Invitations to all WFTGA online events, CMD sessions and networking activities

Do Individual Members have voting rights?
No. Voting rights are reserved for Full Member Associations.
What new benefits are planned from 2026 onward?
- A professional Guide Profile Platform
- Direct booking (“Book a Guide”) options
- Tour-management tools
- Potential accounting and admin tools
- Preferential access to job fairs and partner platforms

What is required for membership?
Proof of being an active professional Tourist Guide, and confirmation that no WFTGA Full Member Association is available in your country.
How long does the approval take?
Applications are reviewed and approved within 30 days.
We are aware that the Individual Membership fee may appear relatively high compared to the contribution Tourist Guides usually pay through their national association. When a guide is a member of a WFTGA Full Member Association, their annual contribution to the WFTGA is usually only a few euros per year, as the association pays a consolidated fee on behalf of all its members.
This reflects the core purpose of the WFTGA:
We are a federation of associations.
Our structure is designed to strengthen cooperation within national associations, support organised representation, and ensure the sustainability of the guiding profession globally.
However, we also recognise the growing need to offer Tourist Guides — especially in countries without active or representative associations — a direct pathway into the WFTGA community. Individual Membership therefore provides access where association structures are missing, inactive, or unable to join the WFTGA.
This is a temporary solution under the current Constitution. As part of our ongoing reforms, we aim to create a fair, accessible and modern Individual Membership model from summer 2026 onward, allowing professional Tourist Guides worldwide to join directly while maintaining clear quality standards and strong ties with associations.
We have intentionally kept the Tier 5 Individual Membership fee very low to ensure that Tourist Guides from low-income countries — especially in regions where no associations exist or where the profession lacks formal structures — have an accessible and fair opportunity to join the WFTGA. This reflects our commitment to inclusivity and to strengthening the guiding profession in parts of the world where financial barriers are particularly high and professional support is most needed.

Registration Process
Individual Membership is currently available only to professional Tourist Guides living in countries where no Tourist Guide Association exists, or where an association exists but is not a Full Member of the WFTGA. Under our present Constitution, this category serves as a temporary solution for guides who lack national representation or access to the global WFTGA network.
However, we recognise that this model is no longer adequate for today’s realities. Many countries have no active associations, some associations do not represent the profession effectively, and in several regions conflicting agendas or internal challenges prevent national bodies from joining the WFTGA.
For this reason, we are revising our Constitution to introduce a modern and inclusive Individual Membership structure. From summer 2026 onwards, all professional Tourist Guides worldwide will be able to join the WFTGA directly — with clear quality standards and a renewed focus on strengthening the global guiding community.
