Responsible Tourist Behavior Guidelines

Drafted by SIT Faculty Distributed at Beijing Tourist Guide Stations

The Responsible Tourist Behavior Guidelines, drafted by Mr. Liu Tang, faculty member of the Shanghai Institute of Tourism, have recently been distributed at tourist guide stations across Beijing.

Developed in accordance with the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism issued by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the Guidelines were reviewed by the Tourist Guide Associations of Beijing, Hebei, and Shanghai, together with Spring Tour Travel Agency. They aim to encourage civilized tourism behavior and contribute to the sustainable development of the global tourism industry.

During July and August, 4,000 copies were distributed free of charge at tourist guide stations in five major Beijing scenic areas, including the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, the Badaling Great Wall, Jingshan Park, and Beihai Park. Further distribution will be expanded during the National Day holiday to strengthen touristsโ€™ awareness of responsibility and promote responsible travel practices.

The Guidelines highlight four key principlesโ€”civilization, environmental protection, respect, and law-abidanceโ€”encouraging visitors to appreciate cultural and natural heritage while consciously practicing responsible behavior.

This initiative demonstrates the commitment of our faculty to serving society, promoting ethical tourism, and fostering collaboration between academia and industry. It also aligns with the mission of the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (WFTGA) to advance professional standards and responsible practices in guiding worldwide.

Shanghai Institute of Tourism will continue to contribute its expertise to enhance tourism education outcomes and to build a responsible, sustainable tourism environment together with partners both in China and abroad.
