WFTGA at the FEGUITUR International Convention in San Pedro de Atacama

Our two Area Representatives, Helga Sturzenegger and Patricia Oviedo, had the pleasure and unique opportunity to participate in the international convention organized by FEGUITUR in the stunning setting of San Pedro de Atacama, Chile.

The programme featured inspiring and thought-provoking conferences. Highlights included a session on astronomy, with insights from the nearby ALMA Observatory — one of the world’s largest and most powerful astronomical observatories, located in the Atacama Desert at an altitude of over 5,000 metres, offering exceptional conditions for observing the universe.

Other sessions focused on archaeology, with a fascinating presentation of petroglyphs dating back thousands of years, as well as critical discussions on biodiversity challenges related to lithium extraction in the salt flats (salares).

I was also honoured to present the WFTGA to the attendees and offer a short workshop — more of a taster or appetizer— of the timeless and universal guiding techniques taught by the WFTGA during its “Train the Trainer” courses, both in situ and at our training centre in Cyprus.

This event was not only an opportunity for professional development and international collaboration, but also a clear sign of the vitality and strength of the guiding profession in Latin America and beyond.

Beyond the academic content, the convention was also rich in cultural visits and meaningful exchanges. , as a young and dynamic federation, impressed us deeply. Its high level of organization, professionalism, and commitment to its member tourist guide associations makes it a true example to follow.

San Pedro de Atacama… “Atrapama” — it truly captures you. With its breathtaking landscapes, the intensity of its colours, the vastness, the majesty of the Cordillera, and above all, the unforgettable warmth of our Chilean colleagues, it left a lasting impression on us.

Chile, you captured our hearts. We will return — again and again.
