On 10th October 2025, the town of Theldeniya in Sri Lanka hosted a vibrant and meaningful celebration of World Tourism Day, under the theme of ecological awareness, cultural pride, and youth education. The event was organised by the Central Province Tourist Guide Lecturers’ Association, in collaboration with the Dumbara Mithuro Environmental and Cultural Society and the Knowledge Management Project – SGP.GEF.UNDP OP7.
Morning Session – Inspiring the Next Generation
The day began with a special seminar for school students, focusing on Knuckles Forest and its tourism resources. Led by Prof. Aslam and fellow academics, the session highlighted the ecological value of the region and emphasised the role of education in promoting sustainable tourism practices among young people.
Afternoon Session – A Journey into Heeloya Tourism Village
In the afternoon, participants were transported to the Heeloya Tourism Village for a field visit. Attendees explored lush paddy fields, waterfalls, and streams, and had the opportunity to taste traditional village cuisine and Ceylon tea. This immersive experience showcased the essence of rural tourism and its contribution to community-based sustainable development.
Evening Main Event – Culture, Speeches, and Community Spirit
The main evening event took place at the Indika Udawatta Open Theater, located on the premises of the Divisional Secretariat Office. Distinguished guests included:

A heartfelt vote of thanks was delivered by the Central Province Tourist Guide Lecturers’ Association, highlighting the collaboration and community spirit behind the event.
Special Highlight – Night Market and Trade Fair
The celebration concluded with a Trade Fair and Night Market in Theldeniya Town, running from 7:00 pm until midnight. Local artisans, producers, and entrepreneurs showcased their goods, offering visitors a unique chance to engage with the local economy and support sustainable livelihoods.
This year’s World Tourism Day in Theldeniya was a testament to the power of tourism to educate, empower, and connect communities, all while honouring cultural traditions and fostering responsible travel practices.
