A Meaningful Encounter in Singapore: Learning from May Hui

Whenever I travel, I make it a point to meet with fellow tourist guides over a coffee to exchange insights about our profession as well as about training. In Singapore, I had the privilege of joining WFTGA trainer May Hui on one of her « training »  walking tours for Tourist Guides —an experience that left a profound impact on me.

May’s training and guiding principle is simple yet powerful, as her volunteering: to make life better for others. She embodies this not only through her dedication to the Singapore Association of Tourist Guides but also through her volunteer work with the Singapore After Care Association. As a volunteer to prison inmates preparing for release, she plays a vital role in helping them reintegrate into society.

During her tour, our group visited the Mawar Community Service Center, where we were warmly welcomed and introduced to the realities of life in prison. The center’s mission is clear: to support ex-offenders on their journey back into the community. Their approach, built on hope, belief, patience, and unwavering support, deeply moved me. The strong emotions in the room and the undeniable sense of hope brought tears to my eyes.

A heartfelt thank you to my Singaporean friends who made this experience possible: to Ariane, trainer and tourist guide in Singapore, who connected me with her colleagues; to Stephan, who guided me to our meeting point in Geylang Serai; and above all, to May, for an unforgettable tour. Lastly, my gratitude extends to WFTGA, whose network fosters these meaningful connections across the world.
