From 11–14 April 2025, Viola Lewis, Susanne Kirchberger and Mateusz Tomaszczyk – three WFTGA trainers proudly represented our global guiding community at the Interpret Europe Conference in Sulejówek, Poland. Set in the inspiring surroundings of the Muzeum Józefa Piłsudskiego, the conference welcomed over 100 delegates from 25 countries to explore this year’s compelling theme:
“Heroes, anti-heroes, and villains: How we (re)create, use, and dismantle them.”
WFTGA actively participated in the event and our LIT Mateusz Tomaszczyk conducted three practical workshops covering a variety of topics related to heritage interpretation, storytelling, facilitation and the changing role of tour guides. These sessions fostered lively discussions and provided valuable opportunities for international exchange.
One of the most memorable moments came during the keynote by Jurn Buisman, Director of the Museum of Geelvinck in Amsterdam, who reminded participants of the responsibility that comes with shaping narratives:
“Let us hold space for discomfort. Let us lift up voices long silenced. Let us dare to tell the full story — even when it’s painful, messy, and unresolved. Our role is not to provide all the answers, but to open doors to possibility.”
Beyond the workshops and presentations, participants explored the legacy of Józef Piłsudski through guided museum tours and visited historic sites in nearby Warsaw, guided by local interpretation experts.
For WFTGA trainers, the conference offered not only a platform to share expertise, but also a chance to gain invaluable international experience and connect with like-minded professionals dedicated to meaningful, inclusive heritage interpretation.
